W jaki sposób wygładzić gradient przy wyświetlaniu?
Najlepiej zobrazować to przykładem:

wyświetla się w ten sposób, że zamiast ładnego, płynnego przejścia widać paski.
a chciałbym, żeby kolory płynnie przechodziły, bez tych pasków.

Takie nieładne przechodzenie kolorów było od samego początku postawienia serwera x. To jest jakiś sterownik, czy ustawienia?

Na screenie widzę płynne przejścia kolorów pomimo że też używam 24-bitowej głębi kolorów.
Spróbuj rekonfigurować xorga: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, ewentualnie zmień głębie kolorów na 32bit. Chociaż z tym u mnie były problemy więc pozostałem przy 24.

32 bitowa głębia nie istnieje, to umowna nazwa dla głębi 24 bitowej + 8 bitów dla kanałów alpha. Taki "chłyt maketinowy". Skuteczny jak widać. :)
A co do istoty problemu — zobacz czy na sterowniku 'vesa' też będziesz miał takie paski.

Praktycznie wszędzie ten umowny zapis jest stosowany, więc baaardzo łatwo nabrać niewtajemniczonych ;P

Sterownik "vesa" nie jest u mnie w ogóle obługiwany - mam Intel i830 i w zasadzie sterownik i810 powinien dobrze działać. Odkopałem jakiś stary backup pliku xorg.conf (używałem z gnomem) i tam nie było takich problemów. Podmieniłem, ale pozostało bez zmian. Może to jest jakieś ustawienie w XFCE? Poza tym w logu xorg pojawia się kilka błędów,może to przez to:

Akurat te błędy dotyczące compiza nie wpływają negatywnie na działanie window-managera, ale są trochę wkurzające.
Zrobiłem zdjęcie aparatem telefonicznym - strasznie słaba jakość, ale pokazuje, że na pulpicie jak również w tle za "kostką compizu" te paski są widoczne.
